David Ogilvy once said: “The best ideas come as jokes. Make your thinking as funny as possible.”
Well, we’re lucky to have Peter McGraw joining us at Nudgestock Global this year, not only to share jokes, but also to share genius. Peter is a global expert in the scientific study of humor and director of The Humor Reseach Lab (HuRL).
As author of Shtick to Business, Peter explores what comedians can teach us about killing it in business by translating the genius and madness of the world’s funniest people into powerful prescriptions for professional success.
Before we hear from him live at Nudgestock, we wanted to find out a bit more about him…
What are your top tips to survive lockdown?
“Make health #1: good sleep, exercise, and eat well.
Lean on friends and family as needed. Pick up the phone!
Use quarantine to break habits and start new ones. While this an unfortunate situation, it is an opportunity to make positive personal and professional change.”
Tell us about a development in your field that surprised you the most this year?
“This isn’t exactly in my field, but I am fascinated by the broad benefits of psychedelics in helping treat a variety of difficult-to-treat problems, notably PTSD.”
What’s your favourite nudge?
“Old and obvious: Defaults.”
What is the piece of work you are most proud of?
“Currently, my new book Shtick to Business. Overall, I am proud of the work that I have done with Caleb Warren, which presents a new model of what makes things humorous. I believe that it will be difficult for me to do better work in the second half of my career. “
And finally, tell us a fact we wouldn’t know about you…
“I host a podcast that takes a positive view of single living. It is called Solo—The Single Person’s Guide to a Remarkable Life."
